The Poets
Then and Now

1958

In St Pats High in Coatbridge Scotland my best mate was Alan Weir.  We went through school together and developed a love of Rock Music.  When I did a paper round to raise the cash for my first guitar Alan was a bit more fortunate in that his mum could just about afford to buy him his first drum kit.  Together we formed The Graduates.  We were both pretty awful and the lead singer thought he was Gene Vincent.  We had a repertoire of five or six numbers which we recycled through a performance and nobody seemed to care.  Then we went our separate ways until one night in 1964, whilst sitting close to the back row in a cinema with a young neighbour I spied Alan standing by the ice cream lady looking around in some desperation.  He had joined a new band called the Poets and they needed me to fill-in for a recording session in London.  I bade the young lady a farewell with grovelling apologies and promises to make it up and that was day one of my life as a POET.
